Serving Lupita Nyong’o Realness

In October of 2013, the movie 12 Years A Slave goes into theaters and now the beautiful Lupita Nyong’o is grabbing everyone’s attention. 12 Years A Slave is a film based on a true story about a man named Solomon Northup, a ‘free negro’ who was kidnapped from Washington D.C. and sold into slavery in 1841. Though her name may be hard to pronounce, her performance in this influential movie will be one to remember. Her character goes by the name Patsey, a young slave also held in bondage. From her stunning looks to her amazing talent, this once upon a time production assitant and Yale School of Drama graduate is now a major actress respected in hollywood.

12 Years a Slave

Though the film has had good and bad reviews, Lupita continues to make her mark. I believe that many African Americans went to see the film and came out of the theater with such hatred towards the Caucasian race. I must admit that the movie did in fact depict scenes in which reflected how slaves during those years were treated, which distrubed quite a few viewers. Nonetheless, whether it be on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, Lupita Nyong’o continues to capture the hearts of film lovers throughout the states; her fan count is growing rapidly. I feel as though she is incredibly talented and has an amazing future ahead of her.

Recently she has been nominated for  the following:

  • Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture
  • Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress (won)
  • Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Breakthrough Actor
  • 17th Hollywood Film Award for New Hollywood Award (won)
  • Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role

Many other nominations and pending nominations follow.

From watching 12 Years A Slave, Luptia quotes “I hope that people share an open-heartedness from watching this movie. You leave this movie and you just want to hug somebody, you know.” Lupita Nyong’o is now the face of MUI MUI’s 2014 campaign and seen as a breath of fresh air in the fashion industry. She just better show them how it’s done. #TeamLupita
